General English (15 hours per week)

Our General English Standard course focuses on developing skills in the four core areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Using a practical approach based on the CEFR levels for language ability, our General English classes enable you to develop the confidence and skills you need to use English effectively in different situations. Whatever stage you are at in your language learning journey, our experienced teachers can help you progress to the next level and achieve your language learning goals.

CEFR Levels Explained

We use the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to shape our courses and measure your progress with English. The CEFR is a global standard for learning, teaching and assessment, and provides a key framework to help you develop your English language skills step by step to meet your learning goals.

What will I learn?

Course content

On this course you will:

  • Receive relevant and interesting classes adapted to each student’s needs
  • Receive an individual tutorial every 6 weeks with the class teacher who will help you to achieve your learning goals
  • Improve your communication skills through class discussions and activities with other students
  • Develop your grammar and vocabulary
  • Read and discuss texts on a wide range of subjects, including magazine articles, news articles or stories
  • Practise speaking and listening skills through discussions, role-play and presentation

    Students join General English in the morning and choose personalised afternoon courses.

    You can choose the following options:

  • Skills & Culture
    Our Skills and Culture module is for anyone with an English level between A1 – C1 who wants to gain a deeper understanding of life and culture in the UK and beyond while practising specific language skills.
    This course focuses on using English to practise real-life situations with other students. Using a variety of real-life texts and materials, students share and discuss information, opinions and ideas to improve their speaking and listening skills and build life skills in English.

  • English for Work
    This course is practical and focuses on communication skills and the language needed to work effectively in a job in an English speaking environment.
    The focus of this course is to give you skills needed to get a job by helping with writing CVs, cover letters and job interviews. The course also focuses on:

    • Customer care, dealing with customers effectively on the phone and face to face,
    • Effective meeting skills, chairing and participating in meetings and understanding the psychological process of decision making
    • Presentation skills, planning and organising a presentation using PowerPoint, and how to use voice and body language to get a message across effectively.
